Top 5 Benefits Of Golden Paste For Dogs
I’m no stranger to the spice turmeric when it comes to cooking, especially curries. It’s one of my favourite spices to use when making Indian dishes. What I didn’t know up to a couple of years ago were the benefits of adding this golden root to both your diet and that of your pets. What I want to focus on is how this spice can make a massive difference in your dog’s health.
There have been well over 5,000 studios showing the health benefits of this now not so unknown spice. It’s so exciting to know you can add something that’s natural, effective, and inexpensive to your dog’s diet.
The active ingredient in turmeric is a compound called curcumin. This compound is an anti-oxidant, and has anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, wound healing and anticancer properties. I’m sure your interest has been peaked by now. Curcumin can help the battle against a variety of diseases like arthritis, diabetes, cancer, liver disease, and gastrointestinal issues.
Let me highlight the Top 5 Ways turmeric can help your dog and how it may be an alternative to traditional drug treatments.
Turmeric Can Treat And Prevent Cancer
Cancer is so prevalent in pets and prevention is an area of interest for many pet parents. What we know from research is that inflammation can take your pet down the path to cancer. Turmeric is a powerful antioxidant and could stop precancerous cells from becoming cancer by killing the cells and prevent more from developing.
Anti-Inflammatory Turmeric Treatment
Chronic inflammation is one thing we all need to eliminate from ours and our pets’ lives. It’s the root of a myriad of diseases. Not to be confused with acute inflammation where white blood cells are sent out to heal the body from viruses or bacteria. Chronic inflammation causes cancer, arthritis, allergies, kidney disease, dental disease, and digestive diseases. Turmeric has been proven to be one of the best natural anti-inflammatories.
Relieve Arthritis Pain With Turmeric
Turmeric can decrease inflammation in the body and also relieve the pain and stiffness associated with arthritis. This could truly make a difference to any pet suffering from arthritis especially a senior pet.
Treat Gastrointestinal Problems With Turmeric
A healthy gut is crucial to any pet’s health and with turmeric’s anti-inflammatory effects can be effective in the treatment of Inflammatory Bowel Disease. There are other gastrointestinal disorders that turmeric can help with also.
Replace Steroids With Turmeric
Steroids are prescribed to many dogs for joint issues but can turmeric take their place or work together? The answer is yes. There are studies showing that steroids can indeed be replaced with a turmeric treatment. It’s just as effective as traditional medicine and has the added bonus of your pet not having to experience the side effects of steroids.
How To Make Golden Paste For Your Dog
I’m sure your interest has been peaked by now after learning of some of the benefits of adding turmeric to your pet’s diet. I’ve already explained the benefits of turmeric but why are we adding coconut oil and fresh ground black pepper to the recipe? Curcumin in turmeric needs some help when it comes to absorption. It’s not easy for your dog to absorb alone, so we recruit a couple of ingredients to boost its absorption effectiveness.
Coconut Oil and Black Pepper
The guideline is 1/4 tsp per 10lbs weight. For example 1/2 tsp for a 20lb dog. You can split the dosage between meals.
Consult Your Holistic Veterinarian
Always check with your holistic vet before adding turmeric to your pet’s diet. Ask your vet if it will interact with any medications your pet is taking.
1/2 cup (125 mls/60gms) turmeric powder
1 cup water (250 ml)
1/3 cup (70 ml) Raw (unrefined) Cold Pressed Coconut Oil
2-3 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper (I use a coffee grinder to make a fresh batch)
Bring turmeric and water to a boil.
Lower heat and simmer 7-10 mins until it’s a thick paste.
Add additional water if necessary.
Take off the heat.
When the paste is just warm add coconut oil and mix well.
Allow to cool and place in a mason jar in the refrigerator.
Golden Paste will keep for 2 weeks refrigerated
My Furkids Love It
My dogs Thornton and Mr Twix love golden paste and don’t mind the taste as some people would expect. I’ve witnessed improvements in their health, for example, less stiffness in the joints. When I make my golden paste I make it for my entire family. The dogs get it in their food and I make a tea with almond milk, honey, and a little ginger. It’s delicious (helps me sleep) but most of all I know it improves our health.
